While what you did works, I also just moved over to HostGator and transferred 3 WordPress blogs, and seemed to have done it in fewer steps. Maybe I will blog my experience as well. But to cut it short mine was as simple as copying a folder, creating a database/running a query, and changing the wp-config. DNS was pointed over within a couple hours and everything was back to normal.
I have migrated 3 blogs last week and I always exported XML from wordpress and imported it on the new host. Of course I had to transfer plug-ins and themes but content and posts were transferred without hitch.
Phpmyadmin can be painful if it doesn’t support gzipped uploads and if the blog size is ‘large’.
